What is IISc?

Where is IISc located?
IISc is situated near Malleswaram and Yeshwanthpur in Bengaluru. Its green campus located in the heart of the city is home to several rare species of flora and fauna.

What is special about IISc?
IISc is India’s premier research institute, consistently ranked among the top Indian institutions in the world. It has a rich legacy of science and technology contributions. It has been ranked as India’s #1 university and #1 research institution in the National Institutional Ranking Framework by the Ministry of Education. IISc offers PhD programmes in almost branches of science and engineering – about 65% of its 4500 students are PhD students. The Institute also offers several Master’s programmes, a BSc (Research) programme and a newly-introduced BTech Programme in Mathematics and Computing degree. The Institute lays equal emphasis on science and engineering, and nurtures a wide spectrum of disciplines spread across more than 40 departments and centres. What is Open Day?
The Open Day of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, is an annual event showcasing the Institute’s research activities and facilities to the student community and the general public. In the year 2023, it will be held on Saturday, 24th February 2024 from 9 am to 5 pm.
On this day, students, science and technology enthusiasts and the public will have an opportunity to visit the Institute and go around the campus to explore the exciting science and technology initiatives and activities at the Institute. Open Day will feature popular lectures, experimental demos, poster presentations, quiz contests, scientific competitions, and exhibitions that will be showcased in various departments and centres. A “Kids-Zone” will offer a special attraction for all the younger students, with a number of science and technology demos will be on display.
Is the entry to the Open Day free?
Yes. Entry to the Open day is free. We encourage you to register for the event.
How does one register to participate in the Open Day?
Educational and other institutions as well as individual members of the public are strongly encouraged to register for the event by accessing the following links. There are two types of registrations.

Is online registration mandatory?
It is strongly encouraged. If you are unable to register for some reason, you are still welcome to visit the IISc campus on the Open Day. If you register, you will get periodic updates on the programmes.
Are there any special attractions for younger participants including children?
Yes. An exciting programme called ‘Kids zone’, which includes many scientific experiments accessible to young children, will be hosted by IISc students, who are members of Science for Rural India (SFRI) (visit: http://www.scienceforruralindia.in/).
Would I be able to see scientific equipment and experimental facilities?
Yes. Many sophisticated scientific equipments and facilities will be displayed with live demos. Visitors will have the opportunity to see many such facilities and how they are utilised for research.
Can we interact with IISc researchers?
Yes and without any restrictions on Open Day. Visitors are encouraged to interact with faculty members, students and research scholars. Popular lecture demos will also be conducted on selected subjects.
Where do we park the school buses, cars and two wheelers?
Vehicle parking is arranged at two locations: (1) School Bus/Four Wheelers Only: In front of the open ground opposite to Lakshmi Ammanni college; (2) Two Wheelers Only: Inside the IISc Gymkhana ground. Visitors in school vans and buses may drop their students at the Main Gate of IISc and then park the vehicles at parking lots mentioned above. No private vehicles will be allowed inside the IISc campus on the Open Day. Parking is on First Come First Serve.
Are there food stalls available?
Yes. There will be a number of food stalls spread across the campus serving a variety of menus. All food stalls are hygienic and are FSSAI certified.
Will there be any help desks?
Yes. There will be as many as 13 help desks offering help, advice, and directions to assist visitors in easily navigating within the IISc campus. These help desks provide information about live demos, lectures, experiments, etc. Garbage collection bins also kept near all the help desks.
What about drinking water facility?
Drinking water facility will be provided at all the 13 help desks. The visitors are requested to bring their own bottles and tumblers/cups to fill water from these drinking water facilities. No paper cups or plastic bottles will be provided. Only stainless-steel glasses will be available at the water dispensing stations.
What about washrooms/rest rooms?
Yes. Bio toilets will be available at 15 places across the campus.
Is there any transportation system within the campus for the elderly and for younger children?
Yes, E-rickshaws will be available for the elderly and children.
Is the above transport facility available free of cost?
Yes. This facility is free of cost.
After parking our car/vehicle how do we get in to the main venue?
After parking, you can walk to the exhibit areas. Signboards will direct you to the various exhibits.

Is there an ambulance facility available?
Yes. Five ambulances are available for handling any kind of emergency. Visitors may contact the IISc Health Centre helpline 080-2293 2227 or the nearest helpdesk.

Will there be any printed material with information on various programmes?
No, we plan to make this a completely paper free event. But information will be accessible through the Internet, the signages and helpdesks.
